The Bangarra Dance Theatre’s production of Patyegarang takes us back to a time when the first colonial fleet
disembarked on sacred Indigenous ground (Eora country) in NSW. The production unfolds an unlikely and majorly
underexplored side of the 18th century in Australia: it’s the factual tale of friendship between the colony’s timekeeper
and a young Aboriginal woman, who teach each other their mother tongues in a seemingly improbable act of courage,
trust and companionship. “I think audiences can look forward to being transported back in time... and experience the
essence of the land as it was,” says lead dancer Jasmin Sheppard. Through the lens of his Aboriginal descent, award-
winning and distinctive choreographer Stephen Page – who can also claim the choreography credits for Bran Nue Dae
and The Sapphires – conveys Patyegarang in a fresh and intimate style.
