TASTE THE STATES
American cuisine is Perth’s food du jour. Here are the
best restaurants to find it.
The Cutting Board Eathouse 202 Pier Street, Perth
The Merrywell Crown Perth Great Eastern
Miss Kitty’s Saloon 882 Beaufort Street, Inglewood
The Old Crow 172 Newcastle Street, Perth
Old Faithful Bar & BBQ 86 King Street, Perth
Pleased to Meet You 38 Roe Street, Northbridge
ADDISON & STEELE SPECIALTY COFFEE
The folks behind CBD espresso bar Standing Room Only
have just opened a new cafe in North Perth, and we’ve fallen
for it hard. Caffeine lovers can choose between myriad
new-age styles – cold drip, siphon, filter, aeropress, pour-over
– but old schoolers won’t be judged for asking for a capp.
1/448 Fitzgerald Street, North Perth.
ARCHITECTS AND HEROES
We’re smitten with new Subi espresso bar Architects
and Heroes. The reasons: awesome Code Black Coffee,
unpretentious-yet-passionate baristas, a swell black and white
mural by Melbourne visual artist peche, and the Chocolate
Starter (espresso mixed with Bahen Chocolate). Shop 35,
17-31 Rokeby Road, Subiaco.
ENGINE ROOM ESPRESSO
Aside from its owners/baristas being very easy on the eyes
(all three are firemen), the cafe serves a mean cup of Pound
coffee, sweets from Rawgasm, and free babycinos. Need
we mention that single ladies make up the majority of the
clientele? 450c Fitzgerald Street, Perth.
HARDWARE STORE CAFE AND EATERY
Scarborough breakfasteers are flocking to this new Brighton
Road cafe for its killer Campos coffee, modern fare and
laid-back digs. In a nod to the building’s previous life as
a hardware store, rusted tools hang on bare brick walls, water
comes in metal watering cans, and giant wire spools act as
outdoor tables. 117a Brighton Road, Scarborough.
Every day is a party at La Farmacia, a new cafe in Doubleview.
Outside, brightly coloured bunting crisscrosses the large
front window, above pastel stools and faux grass. Inside,
stencilled floors, baby-blue chairs and hand-painted signs
are equally festive. The menu features homemade treats
and coffee from local roasters Pound. 255 Scarborough
Beach Road, Doubleview.
Pasta and coffee. That’s a fitting pair if ever we saw one. New
Tommy Sugo cafe offers both to the UWA throngs whose fuel
of choice is carbs and caffeine. The pasta is swoonworthy. It’s
made by hand, reasonably priced (around $10) and comes
with a choice of seven different sauces. Broadway Fair
Shopping Centre, 88 Broadway, Crawley.
YABBA DABBA KITCHEN & CAFE
Last we checked, Dalkeith looked nothing like Bedrock from
The Flintstones: no foot-powered cars, no pet dinosaurs.
Questionable name aside, the family-friendly cafe’s relaxed
vibe, warm decor and friendly staff are earning it a slew of
fans. You’d better start saving your clams for this one.
99a Waratah Avenue, Dalkeith.
Perth’s best new cafes
Architects and Heroes.
Hardware Store Cafe and Eatery.
