SPORTS & OUTDOORS
Running 5km just doesn’t seem to cut it anymore...
Mind-numbingly tough obstacle courses are becoming
more and more popular, so if charging through a River
of Fire or trudging through a Slithering Swamp is your
idea of a fun day out, here’s a list of this season’s most
1. The Stampede
If you want to ease yourself into this kind of event,
The Stampede is more about the fun than gruelling,
soul-crushing obstacles. It encourages costumes and
groups of all ages, and with a motto like, ‘If you want
a trophy, bring your own’, you know you’re up for a fun
time in good company. Wooloroo, May 3.
2. True Grit
Designed and run by two Australian Special Forces
commandos with a combined 32 years of military
experience, this 10km event has a meticulously
designed, super-tough course, on which participants
will encounter 30 military-inspired obstacles.
Donnybrook, May 31-Jun 1.
3. Mud Gladiators
Pack your camp gear and head out to the Coolcalalaya
Station where a 15km obstacle course awaits in some
of Australia’s harshest conditions. If you’re able to
function afterwards, there’s ice-cold beer and live
music late into the night. Coolcalalaya Station, Jun 14.
Perth is almost always listed in the world’s top five
windiest places, but while some batten down the
hatches as the wind whips through, others run to the
beach to catch the ultimate ride. Windsurfing WA
president, Tim Brazier, shares the best local spots and
classes for beginners.
LUCKY BAY, ARDROSS
With flat water out to a sand bank and then more flat
water out beyond it, Lucky Bay has perfect conditions
for learners. It also has a thriving group of windsurfers
who are always keen to help a new sailor develop.
Check out 2nd Wind Sailboards, which offers regular
beginner classes there. 2ndwind.com.au.
PELICAN POINT, NEDLANDS
Slightly windier than Lucky Bay, Pelican Point also has
great flat-water conditions out along the point. The
shallow water closer in is great for those new to
the sport as well. Windforce rents windsurfing gear
off the beach as well as offering lessons. Pelican Point
is also home to Windforce Wednesday Night Slalom
for some fast racing action. windforce.com.au.
Two hours outside of Perth, on a 1500m airstrip, there’s an annual drag race that looks
like a scene straight out of The Fast and the Furious.
Racewars brings out a variety of cars – old and new, imports and exotics – to line
up and wait for their chance to burn serious rubber. The concept is simple: all contestants
race in their own car with the choice of 400m, 800m or 1000m distances. “The event idea
was hatched over a few pints in 2012,” says Racewars chairman, Jonathan Murray. “We
drove up [to Wyalkatchem] for a meeting with the shire CEO, not really knowing what
we were going to say... the shire liked the sound of our idea and agreed to give us
a chance. After the meeting, we drove around the venue, took photos of the airstrip
and posted it to Facebook saying we’d just been given the green light to run an event on
it. By the time we drove back to Perth the photo had 168 comments and God knows how
many likes.” And the rest is hoon history. Wyalkatchem Airstrip, Apr 12-13.
