RESTAURANT & CATERING
There’s plenty of jargon in the wine world; lots of
fancypants words that can quickly make you feel
like an outsider if you’re in the presence of wine
snobs. So here’s a breakdown of few to make you
sound like a smarty without resorting to snobbery.
The vintage on the label is the year in which the
grapes were harvested. Red wines are generally
released later than white wines because they will
spend longer ageing in the winery. Vintage also refers
to the harvest-time itself and to the year as a whole.
A broad term you’ll find on some wine labels
indicating the wine may be of higher quality than the
winery’s non-reserve. The wine may be aged longer
in barrel and bottle and the alcohol may be higher.
However, with the exception of Spain, the term is
not regulated and bears no official standing.
Happy Birthday to the Swan!
The Swan Valley is celebrating an exciting milestone this year – 180 years of winemaking history. The first commercial
vintage in the Swan was made at Olive Farm Winery by Thomas Waters in 1834. To mark the occasion, the Swan Valley
Winemakers Association is hosting events throughout 2014. Head to scoop.com.au for more information.
