From bows and arrows to competitive clay target shooting, WA is a mecca for shooting
enthusiasts and there’s a target for every marksman (and woman).
There are no fewer than 15 archery clubs around Perth (check out the Archery Western
Australia website to find your local), and each offers lessons for novices through to
advanced archers, often from nationally accredited coaches. Indulge your inner Robin
Hood at a Saturday Session with The Archery Centre. All newcomers get a one-hour
lesson for just $10 per hour (tights are optional!). Mindarie, most Saturdays 9am-noon.
Drive 45 minutes in any direction from Perth and you’re guaranteed to find a paintball
session. Each playing field features an array of adventure scenarios, from incredible
movie-set quality game zones (think Tomb Raider) to urban wastelands, mazes or even
a 70,000sqm battlefield complete with two-storey forts. It’s a surefire way to get the
adrenalin flowing. For those who want to go all-out, you can compete in tournaments or
even full war scenarios. And in school holidays, some venues offer mid-week discounts.
If you want to graduate from (paint)balls to bullets, Perth has got you covered. For
novices, Lone Ranges Shooting Complex has a beginner’s package ($85) that includes
safety training, a course in using different types of guns, ammunition and targets. For
those with a little more expertise, there are plenty of rifle clubs and shooting ranges with
many offering safety training classes. For something a little different, the Perth Field Rifle
Club hosts several night shoots throughout the year, while the Perth Fremantle Rifle Club
offers competitive target rifle shooting.
