FOOD & WINE
DANCE & FITNESS
ARTS & CRAFTS
This might be the most fun way to get fit, like, ever. It’s
sort of like a colourful skate dance party that works your
endurance, flexibility, core and balance. Now, to glide off to
Venice Beach... Lucky Skates WA, ongoing.
Channel your inner Liza Minnelli – come on, everyone’s got
one – at this musical theatre dance class with tunes from
ARCHICAMPS – ARCHITECTURE FOR KIDS
Sort of like Toddlers in Tiaras, but for children of failed
architects. Just kidding! These architecture classes for kids
teach design principles, building history, and the merit of
teamwork, and look so awesome we want to tag along, too.
House of ARC, Jan 21-22 .
If you’re crushing on Pippa McManus as hard as we are (check
out the spring cover of Scoop for proof), the thought of
creating whimsical fashion illustrations will make you dreamy.
Led by someone in the fashion industry, this class teaches you
the technical know-how. Central TAFE, Feb TBC.
SEWING – FASHION FOR YOUR CHILDREN
If you’re an arty mamma or papa (or Baby Bjorn collector –
hey, no judgment here!), consider making clothes for your
kids. The focus of this class is on one-of-a-kind pieces with
embellishments and special features, so your kid will be the
coolest in the sandlot. Polytechnic West, Feb 19-Mar 26.
KIDS’ FLY FISHING SCHOOLS
Something about this seems ever so quaint. It’s said to be
one of the most contemplative activities out there, so if you
want to foster future philosophers, sign your kids up! The
Real River Company, ongoing.
CREATE NATURAL SKINCARE WORKSHOP
Something feels wrong about massaging chemicals into our
skin, and when we think about animal testing, we’d almost
rather go pizza-faced. Lucky for us, this natural skincare class
means we won’t have to. Polytechnic West, Mar 15.
Make like all the cool kids
and verse yourself in the
art of market food. After
you ace Hawker stall dishes
like fish wing noodle soup
or beef rendang, you can
hit the town with your
own trendy food truck.
Polytechnic West, Mar 8.
Think school socials, but
minus the crimped hair
and flasks. Anti-wine-snob
Christina Pickard hosts
this night of wine games,
spirited debate, and the
chance to get boozy with
likeminded winos. Plus
you can continue the party
with whiskeys downstairs.
Helvetica, Mar 11.
If you want the taste of Bali, sans beaded hair and Bintang singlets, try this
cooking course. You can learn to make dishes like chicken satay, black rice
pudding, and mi goreng (trust us, the 30 cent pack variety ain’t got nothing on
this!). Urban Provider, Mar 4.
Wicked, Singing in the Rain, and Chicago. Don’t forget your
jazz hands! The Dance Workshop, ongoing.
Now this is exercise we can get behind. Holding a stationary
pose while a vibrating plate burns fat, speeds metabolism
and diminishes cellulite? Sign us up! Pure Moves, ongoing.
This would totally be Zooey Deschanel’s exercise of choice.
The quirky sport is actually a serious workout too, burning
the same amount of calories in eight minutes as a one-mile
run in the same time. Sugar Blue Burlesque, ongoing.
Aromatherapy has been used since medieval times,
and is clinically backed too: sniffing lavender has been
proven to relax, peppermint to improve digestion, and
18th century poet Friedrich Schiller claimed the cure
for writer’s block was smelling rotten apples. Hold on
while we find a compost bin... Australasian Academy
of Wellness Therapies, TBA .
Because really, who eats main courses anymore? Tapas
keeps on trending but when you whip out snack-sized
portions of sherry and herb chicken, patatas bravas,
and cinnamon-dusted churros at your next dinner
party, you’ll be so much more than the flavour of the
month. Matters of Taste, Feb 13, 18.
