The folks at Luna Palace Cinemas have answered the prayers of Beaufort Street dwellers – who, frankly, seem to
have pretty much everything else on their bustling strip – with a new outdoor cinema. The theatre, called bamBOO,
is nestled right behind Luxe Bar in Highgate and is perfect for summer with its tropical feel and amphitheatre-style
seating. “It’s such a unique venue in that you can go from bustling Beaufort Street to a calm and relaxed space,”
says Luna Palace Cinemas managing director Ingrid van den Berghe. bamBOO will screen contemporary films
and cult classics from Wednesday to Sunday, and you can bet we’ll be down there on any given week. The best part?
Stale popcorn and diluted cokes get swapped for cocktails from Luxe Bar and pizzas from ACE next door. Fancy!

Film program manager Madeline Bates gives her pick
of this year’s festival.
1 Stories We Tell
Turning the camera on her own family, Sarah Polley
has created a sensitive and fascinating film. What
starts out as a story about her mother (who died when
Polley was 11) becomes a remarkable story of hidden
histories that will draw you in, regardless of what kind
of family you have. Somerville, Jan 6-12; Joondalup
Pines, 14 -19 .
2 12 Years A Slave
A landmark film, no doubt. A brave and profound
account of a tragic time in American history that is
deservedly being touted for huge Oscar success.
Somerville, Jan 13-19; Joondalup Pines, Jan 21-26 .
3 The Past
The Past cements the fact that Asghar Farhadi
is a master director. After winning the Oscar for
A Separation, this is his first film shot outside of
his native Iran and is another sophisticated,
suspenseful drama about family secrets.
Somerville, Jan 27-Feb 2; Joondalup
Pines, Feb 4-9 .
4 All Is Lost
All round champion of independent cinema, Robert
Redford is still a force to reckon with at the tender
age of 77. Lost at sea and fighting the hostile
environment, Redford’s performance is
a masterclass in acting. A superlative survival story.
Somerville, Feb 3-8; Joondalup Pines, Feb 11-16.
5 The Broken Circle
An ode to bluegrass and passion, TBCB has won the
hearts of audiences around the world. Elise and Didier
are both free spirits who fall in love and try to cope
with all that life throws at them. Somerville, Feb 10-16;
Joondalup Pines, Feb 18-23.
“Australians have a really diverse, dynamic relationship with the coast,” says Girt By Sea director Shane McNeil. “At first
I just thought it was about sunbaking, surf and a bit of fishing, but the more you research it you realise there’s harbours, wharfs,
coastal defence, war, immigration, Indigenous understanding of the coast...” He explored the gamut by thumbing through
hours and hours of archival footage and crowd-sourced home videos for Girt By Sea. The film is a tribute to Australia’s coastal
history, weaved in with as many themes and textures as possible, and set to an original score by WA band The Panics. “In
the same way Tim Winton embraces and understands the coast, The Panics have that too. They have a very strong sense of
Australiana without being glib or clichéd,” says Shane. Plus, “their songs are very big and orchestral, almost symphonic.
I thought it would probably really lend itself to a cinematic score.” In Coast, an event for the film at Somerville Auditorium, The
Panics will join the filmmakers in discussion, and Girt By Sea will screen for the first time. We reckon west coast viewers, with our
attachment to coastal living, will be rapt. “[As a coastal nation] there’s this coastal psychology in that that we
look to the sea,” says Shane. “The beach is part of us.” Somerville, Feb 9.
