SMART STREET PARTIES
These new twilight markets are giving Mandurah a creative
edge, with art, contemporary craft, and retro and vintage
stalls. We heart the suitcase stalls, the first of their kind in
Australia, and the fact that local creatives are getting a way
to show off their works. Street food and live music mean
there’s also fun for the whole family. Jan 17, Feb 14.
SUBI SUNSET MARKETS
On Thursday evenings in summer, food trucks cluster round
Subi train station and the Scoop staff pile out powerlessly,
like mice to the Pied Piper – it smells that good. As well as
our beloved paletas, there are oysters, Japanese pastries,
Mexican tacos, Turkish gozlemes and Moroccan tagines.
Who needs to travel the world, anyway? Thursday nights.
LA PALETA ICY POLES
On those balmy afternoons when sweat collects
in your joints and it’s too hot to expend any effort
on actually chewing, only ice-cream will do. La Paleta
is a godsend then, with quirky ‘How did you think
of that?’ flavoured popsicles. Our personal pick,
Cream Cheese and Raspberry, is smooth, sweet
and slightly tangy, and the perfect arvo pick-me-up.
Other faves are the Lime Pie (which tastes spookily
like the real thing), Roasted Banana, Apple Star
Anise, and Oaxaca Lime.
Find them at Farmers markets, Old Bridge Cellars
and the travelling Comida do Sul food truck.
When a Scoop staffer was caught gazing adoringly at
a picture of this cake on her desktop not once but
three times, we had an inkling: this was no ordinary
treat. When one was brought in for us to try, there was
no question. Thin, fluffy layers of honey-based biscuit
are smothered with sweet whipped caramel filling to
create a cake that conjures all sorts of biblical clichés
(slice of heaven, sinfully good) that just don’t do it
justice. With a family recipe that’s been passed on from
the Czech Republic, the cakes are selling out of farmers
markets almost every week.
Find it at Subi Farmers Market, Kalamunda Famers
Markets, Fremantle Markets, Mt Claremont
Farmers Markets, Growers’ Green
Markets, Perth Upmarket.
Who doesn’t love a hotdog? We reckon even the
ones outside Bunnings are pretty damn good, but
these gourmet Brazilian offerings from a hipster-
approved food truck are next level. Imagine a gourmet
chorizo sausage in a fresh bread roll, smothered with
pineapple, chilli sauce, fresh tomato and onion salsa,
and chimichurri... Drooling yet? Wash it down with
a whole fresh coconut you can stab with a straw.
Find them at The Comida do Sul truck, which travels
to various locations, like Who’s Your Mumma, Leighton
Beach and the Perth Cultural Centre.
Trending – evening markets
In summer, days are longer, nights are warmer, and staying
inside is just not a viable option. It’s a no-brainer, really.
Pick ’n’ mix
Is there anything more whimsical then heading off to the hills with a basket in tow and picking your own fruit?
We think not. Run free in an mango orchard, make the most wholesome strawberry shortcake ever, or turn into
a fair approximation of Willy Wonka’s Violet at one of the blueberry farms.
In season January-March
FRUIT mangoes, cherries, peaches, watermelon, plums
VEGETABLES cherry tomato, cucumber, Jarrahdale pumpkin, sweet corn, kale
SEAFOOD blue swimmer crabs, sardines, squid, octopus, whiting
SUNSET FOOD MARKETS
AT SOUTH BEACH
For Southside dwellers, these food markets are
the makings of a perfect Saturday night. Tasty meals
from global food trucks and chilled live entertainment,
right before you take a dip in the ocean? Yes, please.
