The Chittering Valley and Bindoon wine trails are
the most popular in the region, and boast a smattering
of wineries. The rich soil and Mediterranean climate
yield great shiraz, chardonnay and viognier. Embrace
the warmer weather by cycling along the wine
trails, just make sure you don’t drink and ride.
If you find any concoctions particularly moreish,
keep in the loop about VIP tastings and specials
by signing up for an online news subscription
(many wineries have a wine-inspired newsletter).
You may as well work with the wind while you’re
in Lancelin. Let’s face it... if you work against it
you’re not going to have a great time. Try your
hand at windsurfing with lessons from Werner’s
Hot Spot, which also stocks various windsurfing
gear. If you prefer to tackle the wind on dry land,
take the kids for some kite flying. Don’t forget to
help them with launching to avoid tangled string,
a whole lot of crying, and not much flying.
Look to the stars for an evening with a difference.
At Gingin Observatory, the fully retractable roof and
five powerful telescopes (including the largest in
Australia for public use) allow for awe-inspiring
views. Soak up the magic of star clusters, the
Milky Way, shooting stars, the moon and planets.
Discover the secrets of the universe, learn all
about ‘galactic cannibalism’ and blow your mind
with fascinating facts from enthusiastic astronomers.
Head to the website for dates and bookings.
Some of the best sights in Moore River can be
seen on horseback, including the spring wildflowers.
Local favourite 1300 Trail Rides has a range of horse
rides suitable for kids and adults where you can
trot along the river or head into the state forest.
Youngsters are catered for with ponies, but if
you’re looking for a ride to enjoy with a loved one
(or if you’re on a date), book the Romantic Ride for
Two, complete with wine and chocolates.
Head to the farmers market
on the fourth Sunday of
each month, from 9am to
1pm. There is plenty to
see, buy and eat with
live entertainment, plants,
fresh products, and
cottage arts and crafts.
Lower Chittering Hall,
Treat the family to horses
in action, cookery, fresh

For the adults there is also
amateur wine making and
home brews. A highlight
for the scallywags is the
Junior Pet Show.

Yanchep Crystal Cave
Descend into the cavernous world of Yanchep’s Crystal
Cave and learn about the natural formation of these
underground treasures. There’s a multitude of ancient
stalagmites to be explored alongside the glassy cool
lakes. Tours of the cave take place several times
each day, depending on the weather.
Adrenalin junkies can make the most of the
Lancelin sand dunes by hiring a sandboard at
one of the local servos, convenience stores, or
surf shops for a minimal price. For a new level of
excitement, take to the Moore River sand dunes
with a black plastic strip, water-filled bucket and
body board. Thrills of epic proportions will follow
by creating a sand pile to act as a jump at the end
of your plastic (before the dune hits the river). You’ll
be able to generate enough speed to fly straight
off the jump and into the water!
With such an expansive coastline, you’re sorely missing
out if you don’t go fishing while you’re holidaying
along the North Coast. These towns each boast long
and prosperous fishing histories, so fall in with the
locals and head to the reefs around Lancelin and
Ledge Point for the best chance of catching herring,
whiting and tailor.
