KIDS AND FAMILIES
COOKING UP A STORM
On Junior MasterChef, we learned that
a nine-year-old could cook – and pronounce –
pheasant à l’orange with pistachio and cranberry
filling... and preschoolers joined the national food
obsession. If your kids have started clamouring for
the kitchen utensils, but you don’t have the time or
know-how to help them, consider signing them up
for a cooking school. Check out these classes that
cater for those in highchairs and up.

Oh, starry night
When was the last time you turned your gaze heavenward? For the best view, escape the city limits with the kids,
a blanket and a thermos of hot cocoa. “Try parks and open spaces far away from city lights,” suggests Carol
Redford, owner of Stargazers Club WA. “On moonless nights, Gingin and the Perth Hills offer great views of the
Milky Way, the immense band of stars that is seen across the sky.” DIY stargazing not your thing? Take a guided
tour of the night sky at Gingin Observatory, an hour’s drive from Perth. The observatory’s family-friendly tours will
point out constellations, planets, meteor showers and comets. Just think of all the falling stars you can wish upon.
