Perth Guide 55
Hunt for treasure
There are two ‘treasure hunt’ options for family
fun in the Swan Valley. The Great Valley Rally
and the Amazing Valley Chase both begin at
the Swan Valley Visitor Centre (pick up your
instruction sheets and trail guides here before
you start), then follow the marked trails through
the valley, while the kids solve the clues and
questions to get to the finish line. Both hunts
are designed to be completed in the car, and
it’s a good opportunity for parents to scope out
the beautiful scenery and take note of wineries
and restaurants for future visits.
Knock on the cellar doors
Autumn signals the end of vintage and the
time of year when vineyards start bottling
their harvest for release later in the year.
It’s the ideal time to stop by a few cellar
doors; make sure you talk to the vignerons’
about their top picks of the wines to quaff
now and those that should be cellared for
a few years. With the valley home to more
than 40 boutique wineries, all found on
the 32km Swan Valley Food and Wine Trail
(comprehensive maps are available at the
Visitor Centre and most wineries in the region,
or turn to page 59), there’s plenty to choose
from. If you are short on space in the car, don’t
worry. Many wineries will deliver your purchases
for a nominal fee upon request.
Walk the rapids
For those who are outdoorsy types, lace up
your hiking boots and head for the Bells Rapids
Walk Trail. This fantastically challenging 5.5km
circuit trail (two smaller trails comprise the
entire route, so you can do a shorter walk if you
want) passes along the Swan River and across
the escarpment, giving you great views over the
coastal plains, as well as the rest of the valley.
With minimal rainfall in autumn, it’s an ideal trek.
Get your culture fix
The Swan Valley is a mecca for artists and
galleries of all mediums. From the incredible
sculpture park at Gomboc Gallery (the largest
in the Southern Hemisphere) to the French
provincial art at Monet Gallery, you’ll find works
to inspire. Forge your own art path with other
stellar collections at Taylor’s Food Art Stage,
the public art and structures in Midland, and
Indigenous art at Maalinup Aboriginal Gallery.
