Tie yourself up
Freelance Bow Ties is the on-fleek brainchild of Sebastian Ewing
and Daniel Robertson. We spoke to Daniel about the accessory’s
icons, Perth’s fashion status, and the awesomeness of capes.
What motivated you both to start the business?
The main motivation behind starting the business was the fact that it was impossible
to find any self-tying bow ties in Perth that weren’t plain black or navy. We wanted to
provide a unique alternative that could be worn in more casual settings and that would
stand out at more formal events.
Who are your bow tie-wearing icons and inspirations?
Probably Bill Nye. He loves science and bow ties, as do we.
What do you think Perth fashion, and style, needs?
I think that Perth needs to continue to develop its own identity. We have been taking
steps in recent years to achieve this through the greater demand for high-quality
work from local designers and creatives. The more we can support and encourage the
creators in Perth to pave their own way, the better. Also, more bow ties.
Name some of the trends you’re currently loving.
I’m big on a good pair of leather boots at the moment. Also I’ve heard that capes are
in, which is awesome.
Any top tips for someone wanting to pull off a bow tie with flair?
Firstly, make sure you know how to tie one. For me, it’s the first and most
important point of difference you can have. Secondly, try mismatching your
pocket square if you’re wearing a jacket, and go bright with one or both of them.
p Australian streetwear favourite Culture Kings opened in the Hay Street Mall
a couple of months back, to the delight of cool kids everywhere. Sporting a live
DJ and a barbershop, this store is all about the experience.
p Global retail giant H&M opened its first WA store at Lakeside Joondalup in August.
The two-level store includes apparel, underwear and accessories for women, men,
kids and babies. Don’t be surprised if you get lost while browsing.
p The State Buildings development in Perth’s CBD has gifted us a brand-new precinct
to while away the hours. Retail stores include a new flagship boutique from Aurelio
Costarella; natural skincare company Clean Slate; gift-hamper designer Ginger B,
and organic florist Flowers by Aneura.
p Fashionistas, take note: Scanlan Theodore has opened in Claremont Quarter,
opposite David Jones.
