With its focus on ethical fashion, Rana
Clothing’s online boutique is winning
the hearts of style lovers.
After watching a documentary on 2013’s Rana Plaza
Factory collapse in Bangladesh, in which more than 1100
factory workers were killed, Angie Parker and Rebecca
Dracup were inspired to create Rana Clothing.
As outlined by Angie, “Rana Clothing aims to change
the fashion industry model to help protect the people who
make our clothes, to increase accountability of brands,
and to raise public awareness of the effects of cheap, fast
fashion so that we can all make conscious decisions of
where we direct our spending power.”
To launch, the brand used two crowdfunding
campaigns, describing the experience as a great way to
market the brand, collect market research, and raise
funds. “I learnt that, when crowdfunding, you do need to
be realistic, especially as a start-up brand with a small yet
growing following,” points out Angie. “We were a bit over
ambitious the first time around. But, we decided to try
again, and we successfully raised enough funds to get our
first collection off the ground.”
She says it can be hard to switch to an ethical wardrobe
when we’re used to spending $10 on a cardigan and $5 on
a t-shirt. “My first tip would be to visit your local op shop if
you want to get your bargain fix. My second tip is to know
your wardrobe, and only buy something if you know you
have at least five things you can pair it with.”
She says to keep in mind the cost you save on
a bargain is being paid by someone else in the world.
“And it’s certainly not the brand!”

“Without music, life would be a mistake,” said Nietzsche, and who are we
to argue, especially when you can stock up on vinyl at these havens of sound?
