With fruit yielding, flowers
blossoming and bees buzzing,
spring is the perfect time to
get youngsters in the garden.
You have the Asian elephants, giraffes,
Sumatran tigers, sun bears and red kangaroos of Perth Zoo to
thank for Creature Compost. This special mix of zoo poo is a way to teach kids about
sustainability as well as encouraging them to help their garden grow. You can use it
as soil at home, or punch a few drainage holes in the bag, plant seeds, water well and
watch the plants flourish. 20 Labouchere Road, South Perth, 9474 0444.
Spring is the perfect time for strawberry picking, so why not take the family for a fun
(and healthy) day out? Bullsbrook Strawberry Farm opens from September through to
early December for families to PYO – Pick Your Own. Open seven days a week from
9am-5pm, you pay $5 for two punnets, which hold 1.5kg each, or $10 for a tray, which

Just add water
With the weather warming, are the kids already begging
to hit the water? There are heaps of aquatic adventures on
Perth’s doorstep. Best part? No crowds!
• Rotto is perfect for a family adventure. You can BYO or hire bikes, and ride around
the island to all of its beautiful hidden bays. With crystal-clear lagoons and something
like 400 species of fish, it’s best not to forget the snorkels.
• A one-hour drive north of Perth’s CBD is Moore River. On one side is a beach
where you can frolic in the waves, and on the other a river where you can hire a kayak
and paddle. It’s the perfect destination for families, with a calm, flat swimming area
for the little ones.
• Serpentine Falls is one of state’s most beautiful getaways, located just one hour
southeast of Perth. Serpentine National Park has walking trails, barbecue facilities
and friendly kangaroos, but it’s most famous for its scenic beauty – ancient landforms
with a waterfall that cascades over the sheer granite rock. Bring a picnic rug, put
some bangers on the barbie and take a dip in the water.
• Fifteen minutes outside of Collie is a little-known forest camping area called
Honeymoon Pool. It gets its name from the war days when soldiers used to take
their ladies down to escape the stress of enlisted life. Bring canoes, kayaks or even
just a rope and swing into the water.
