1. CABINET NOIR
Oh, we see what you did there, you clever tricksters.
A play on two wines while also meaning ‘black
office’ in French – communicating that you’re
sophisticated, ironic and hip as hell. The cool kids go
to this Shafto Lane boutique to pick up labels like
Comme Des Garcons, Staple, and Publish.
Shop 14, Shafto Lane, 872-884 Hay Street, Perth.
2. HIGHS & LOWS
It’s Perth’s go-to street- and skate-wear shop,
with special limited edition sneakers from brands
like Adidas, Nike and Vans, displayed like installation
art on timber floors and cabinets. Highs & Lows
takes it a step further, creating its own collections,
as well as collabs with labels like New Balance and
Reebok. Exclusivity FTW.
1/622 Beaufort Street, Mount Lawley;
Rear 21 Bayview Terrace, Claremont;
74-76 King Street, Perth.
3. HYPE DC
They’ve been around since 1998 but only opened
their first Perth store last year (to the sounds of
rejoicing from local sneaker fans). The super-sized
retail store stocks Lacoste, Vans, Adidas and
Onitsuka Tiger, plus plenty more.
195 Murray Street, Perth.
It’s hard to believe Perth guy Greg Long didn’t
have any prior design experience when he started
his sunglasses label A Rock On A Lens. In fact,
the then-marketing student didn’t harbour any
hopes for the project other than thinking it would
be a cool addition to his CV. But the range of
embellished sunglasses – which he designs and
makes by hand – took off. Even The Vampire
Diaries star Kat Graham was seen rocking a pair of
the eye-catching sunnies. Actually, ‘eye-catching’ is
an understatement. These glasses are over-the-top
to the point of being outrageous – in the best
possible way, of course. It’s no surprise that Greg’s
muse is Nicki Minaj. “I am such a big fan, and
have been for such a long time,” he says. “I love
her edge, I would love to see her in a pair.” Think
the glasses look awesome, but you wouldn’t
actually wear them IRL? He hears you. “People
were saying they absolutely loved the design, but
for the price point and practicality it wasn’t worth
it. So I’ve started to do a lot more simple stuff,
which should come out in the next month or two,
at that hundred-dollar price point that you can
wear with anything, every day.” Still, he reckons if
you’ve got the sass, you should rock the current
collection – he would. “I’m pretty crazy, I’ll wear
anything, everywhere,” he says. “You’ve just got to
have the balls to wear them. Not everyone has the
confidence to wear something that extravagant.”
Find them at Merge, Subiaco.
