Making a splash
Have fun while keeping cool
this summer with a trip to an
outdoor water playground.
Surrounded by wildflower gardens on the banks
of the Swan River, this might be Perth’s prettiest
outdoor water park. It also delivers on facilities: four
pools, a playground, mini golf, shaded seating, and
free barbecue facilities. Expect to stay a while.
Ellenbrook Rainbow Waters Playground
Safety and sustainability were central to the design
of this playground: there’s seating close to the
pools, for watching little swimmers; the splash pad
under the playground is soft and environmentally
friendly, and the park is almost entirely sheltered
by shade sails. The 15 water features and free entry
don’t hurt, either.
Water Labyrinth @ Forrest Place
The kids might know it as the ‘fun fountain thing in
the city’, but did you know this installation is actually
a piece by internationally renowned artist Jeppe
Hein? Appreciate it either for its aesthetic beauty,
or the fact that it’s fun, every day during summer
between 10am and 6pm.
Hyde Park Water Playground
Pack a picnic for a trip to this park: its location by the
shady Hyde Park trees makes it a perfect place to
spend a summer afternoon. The water operates from
8am to 8pm every day, and there are tipping bells
and water cannons to put to good use. And better
yet, it’s free!

Wonders of the deep
You may have glimpsed them at one of Perth’s beaches last summer, and if you keep a keen eye out you’ll
spot them again this year. Mermaids Amelia and Jessica Pearl are known to pop up at suburban beaches –
from Yanchep to Mandurah – to surprise and delight beach-goers, and to remind us all of the magic of fantasy.
Visit perthmermaids.com for location hints, or try your luck at the beach this summer.
Markets aren’t just for grown-ups.
Try out these family-friendly options.
You’ll have the opportunity to buy work directly from the
creators at this marketplace of Aboriginal art, where artists
will share stories through music, film and live painting. Perth
Cultural Centre, Apr 18, 9389 7222.
Twilight Hawkers Market
Make Friday night family night, with a visit to these weekly
markets. There’s a wide range of food stalls to choose from,
and live circus, music and acrobatic entertainment to keep
little patrons entertained. The family-friendly 4:30pm start
time means a gentle introduction to weekend shenanigans.

We know it’s a waste of a summer’s
day watching TV, but surely it’s OK
if the screen is outside...
