WA opera singer Ileana Rinaldi (inset) can’t get enough of Il
Trovatore. “It’s very hard not to break into song alongside the
leads sometimes,” she says. “The music is just that amazing.”
The Romanian-born mezzo-soprano will be part of the chorus
in WA Opera’s performance of the Verdi classic and says
her multi-lingual background has greatly contributed to her
understanding of the work. “Romanian, being a Latin-based
language, has helped enormously with the Italian and Latin
repertoire, and the combination of being able to speak German
and understand part of Hungarian has helped with the understanding
and diction across all the other repertoire.” Ileana graduated from WAAPA in 2002.
“Depending on your talent, your tenacity and your adaptability, Perth can be a useful
tool for the young musician. We have a plethora of talented musicians in Perth and
although we’ve sadly lost great teachers of the operatic craft, like Molly McGurk and
John Milson in recent years, we have their legacy in their students who still teach here.”
Ileana’s international debut was in Tokyo, as Maddalena in Verdi’s Rigoletto, and she
is eager to perform another opera from one of her favourite composers. “I am greatly
affected emotionally by music so I am really looking forward to letting the music wash
over me,” she says. “The ‘jail scene’ is my favourite part. Every time I see Elizabeth
Campbell in the performance I get goosebumps.” His Majesty’s Theatre, Oct 30-Nov 8.
MORNING MELODIES: ON THE FIRST DAY OF CHRISTMAS
There’s nothing like being able to say you saw a performer before they hit the big time. West
Australian Opera’s rising stars will be in full festive spirit during their Christmas concert. The
show, presented by members from the Young Artists Programme, appears as one of the
Morning Melodies series – one-hour concerts from some of Australia’s finest talent, followed
by morning tea in the theatre foyer where guests are given the opportunity to meet the
performers. For your dose of Yuletide cheer (and bragging rights at later dinner parties), get
along to this particular performance. His Majesty’s Theatre, Dec 17.
