this annual outdoor

concert. Langley Park,
During the Christmas holiday season, Handel’s
Messiah oratorio is a fixture in concert halls
across the world. Perth Concert Hall is among
them this year when the West Australian
Symphony Orchestra performs the treasured work.
The orchestra is joined by the WASO Chorus and
a cast of international soloists, conducted by
Matthew Halls. It is a masterpiece of emotionally
uplifting music, timeless in its inspiration. And, of
course, it includes the famous, rousing Hallelujah
Chorus. Perth Concert Hall, Dec 5-6 .
Ben Folds Live
When American rocker Ben Folds first joined
forces with WASO back in 2005, it was a match
made in heaven. Now, to prove that lightning
does strike the same place twice, the dynamic
combination will be merging genres here in Perth
again. Ben’s high-energy performance will include
excerpts from his new, critically acclaimed Concerto
for Piano and Orchestra, but he promises not to
be obnoxious. “I’m not there to demoralise the
orchestra by coming through with a loud rock band
and grafting high-volume, stupid parts onto what
they’re doing,” Ben says. “To me, the orchestra is
the rock band. ” Perth Concert Hall, Nov 28-29.

lofty jarrah arches, the cathedral is an iconic venue
that houses the widely acclaimed Cathedral Choir.

WASO at the Movies
Grammy Award-winning conductor Richard Kaufman will
join WASO for a journey through timeless Hollywood
classics here next month, and says he can’t wait to
perform with the orchestra. “They have such a passion
and understanding of what it means to not just play the
notes, but make the music come alive,” Kaufman says.
The conductor believes music is as important to films
as the actors themselves. “Music is so often an unseen
character,” he explains. “It helps take the audience on the
journey created by the actors, director, and writers. Just
imagine Casablanca or Gone with the Wind without the
music... Impossible, right?” The legend in the film music
world has had a hand in the likes of Saturday Night Fever
and The Pink Panther, as well as coaching Jack Nicholson
and Tom Hanks on set, so it’s no wonder he is hard-
pressed to pick a favourite film score. He does admit,
though, that playing the violin for the infamous Jaws
theme was pretty memorable. “It was the first of five films
scores by John Williams that I had the honour of being
part of, and I’m happy to say that it also began a long and
cherished friendship with John.” We hope his friendship
with WASO lasts just as long.
Perth Concert Hall, Nov 21-22 .
